A grant is a form of student aid that you do not have to repay as long as you meet all of the obligations. It's easy to think of a grant as a coupon that you can apply to your tuition, lowering your education costs.

Grants are available through the federal government, your state government, and your school. The two most common federal grants are the Pell Grant and the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG).

Your eligibility for grants is usually based on your family's ability to pay, the cost of your education, and certain merit criteria.

How to Apply

The first step to applying for any type of grant is to complete the FAFSA® (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

Be aware that federal, state, and campus-based grants may have different deadlines, so make sure you submit the FAFSA by the appropriate deadline.

Also, depending on the type of grant you are seeking, you may need to supply more information than just the FAFSA.
